Tanzania Safari Packing and Day Plan

Two hard limits shape every northern-circuit trip: bush flights take about 15–20 kg per person in soft-sided bags, and park gates open around 06:00–06:30 and close at 18:00.

Step one is documents. The visa costs about USD 50–100 for most nationalities and about USD 100 for US citizens, and a yellow-fever certificate is required only when arriving from an endemic country — check the routing, not just the destination.

Step two is the bag. Inter-camp flights are light-aircraft hops of 30–60 minutes between airstrips, and the allowance is about 15–20 kg in a soft-sided bag; a hard suitcase is the classic reason for a repack on the tarmac.

Step three is layers. In the June–October dry season, plains temperatures run from 8–14 °C at night to 20–28 °C by day, so a morning drive starts cold and ends warm.

Step four is the daily schedule. Gates open around 06:00–06:30 and the morning drive runs 3–4 hours from first light; the afternoon is planned so the vehicle is back inside before the 18:00 close.

Steps five and six are confirmation passes: re-check the fee ranges, which are revised most years, and re-check the baggage allowance with the flight operator shortly before departure.

If the month is not yet chosen, start with Best Time to See the Serengeti Migration; for the money side, Tanzania Park Fees and Permits lists the ranges.
